Efficacy of Nasacort Iontophoresis in Reducing Facial Pain Associated with Chronic Maxillary Sinusitis: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Background: Chronic sinusitis is an ongoing inflammation of the sinonasal cavities that persists for over three months. Chronic sinusitis accounts for 1% to 2% of physician consultations and contributes substantially to overall healthcare costs.
Objective: To investigate the effect of Nasacort nasal spray by iontophoresis on facial pain caused by chronic maxillary sinusitis.
Methods: This pre and post randomized controlled trial was conducted at outpatient clinic in faculty of physical Therapy at Nahda University, Beni-Suef governorate, Egypt, Sixty subjects (36 males and 24 females) were randomly assigned to two groups of 30 participants each. Participants received Nasacort (Triamcinolone acetonide, 220 mcg) either topically or via iontophoresis, administered in seven sessions over two weeks.
Results: The treatment group showed a significant reduction in facial pain, with the mean score decreasing from 3.83 ± 0.9 at baseline to 0.50 ± 0.57 at the 1-month follow-up.
Conclusion: corticosteroid delivery via iontophoresis is a highly effective and well-tolerated treatment for chronic maxillary sinusitis. The results of the current study would introduce a scientific applicable protocol to help physical therapists and physicians in their dealing with chronic maxillary sinusitis.
